When I was a teenager, my grandad introduced me to the art of crafting small rocking chairs from wooden pegs—the kind that gypsies used to sell door-to-door. My first attempts were a total flop! However, my nanna soon expressed her concern about where to store all these chairs. We had a bit of a dilemma! So, my grandad had a clever idea: why not switch gears and start making gypsy carts instead? Nanna wasn’t too pleased—she had no room for those either!
Then one day, a friend of my nanna’s named Marion dropped by for a chat. She spotted our creations and exclaimed, “You could sell these! Earn yourself some money!”

Always on the lookout for ways to make a little cash, I decided to take all those wooden chairs and carts, clean them up, sand them down, and give them a couple of coats of clear varnish. To make them even more attractive, I added some dried flowers I picked up from the market.
I ventured out into the neighborhood, selling my wooden creations to friends and family for maybe 50p or a pound. To my surprise—and my grandad’s—they were flying off the shelves! We even had people on waiting lists, eager to get their hands on a wooden rocking chair or gypsy cart.
It felt incredible to create a little income stream from something I made with my own hands. (Just between us, don’t tell the tax man!)
