Have you noticed? Everywhere you look in this crazy world, it seems like everyone is on a relentless quest for more money. Extra cash, fast cash, even Elon Musk seems to be in on the game! But let’s be real—the world of money is totally unbalanced. Millions are suffering, lacking basic human needs like food and water, all thanks to endless wars and corrupt governments.
And let’s not forget about climate change—another byproduct of our insatiable greed. Some say greed is good, but for who? If we’re honest with ourselves, many of us are caught up in the same cycle.
A Lesson from My Grandad
When I was a teen, my grandad taught me how to make small rocking chairs from wooden pegs—the kind that gypsies used to sell at our door. My first attempts? A total disaster! But hey, practice makes perfect, right? After a few tries, I finally crafted six or seven that met my grandad’s approval.
But then my nanna chimed in, worried about where to put all these chairs. We had a problem on our hands! So, my grandad had a sneaky idea: why not switch gears and make gypsy carts instead? Nanna wasn’t thrilled—she had no room for those either!
Then, one day, a friend of my nanna’s named Marion popped by for a chat. She spotted our creations and said, “You could sell these! Earn yourself some money!”
Turning a Hobby into Income
Always on the lookout for ways to make a buck, I took all those wooden chairs and carts, cleaned them up, sanded them down, and gave them a couple of coats of clear varnish. To make them even more appealing, I added some dried flowers I picked up at the market.
I hit the neighborhood, selling my wooden creations to friends and family for maybe 50p or a pound. To my surprise—and my grandad’s—they were flying off the shelves! We had people on waiting lists, eager for their own wooden rocking chairs or gypsy carts.
It felt amazing to create a little income pot from something I made with my own hands. (Don’t tell the tax man, though!)
