A Lesson from My Grandfather
When I was a teenager, my grandad introduced me to the craft of making small rocking chairs from wooden pegs—the kind that gypsies used to sell at our doorstep. My initial attempts were a complete disaster! But as the saying goes, practice makes perfect. After several tries, I finally managed to create six or seven that met my grandad’s approval.
However, my nanna soon voiced her concern about where to put all these chairs. We had a bit of a dilemma! So, my grandad had a clever idea: why not switch gears and start making gypsy carts instead? Nanna wasn’t too thrilled—she had no room for those either!
Then one day, a friend of my nanna’s named Marion popped by for a chat. She spotted our creations and said, “You could sell these! Earn yourself some money!”
Turning a Hobby into Profit
Always on the lookout for ways to earn extra money, I decided to take all those wooden chairs and carts, clean them up, sand them down, and give them a couple of coats of clear varnish. To make them even more appealing, I added some dried flowers I picked up from the market.
I ventured out into the neighborhood, selling my wooden creations to friends and family for maybe 50p or a pound. To my surprise—and my grandad’s—they were flying off the shelves! We even had people on waiting lists, eager for their own wooden rocking chairs or gypsy carts.
This experience taught me valuable lessons about turning hobbies into profitable businesses and the importance of financial literacy. It felt incredible to create a little income stream from something I made with my own hands. (Don’t tell the tax man!)
